Towne Street Theatre
Nancy Renee (she/her) is the Co-Founder/Co-Producing Director Towne Street Theatre, LA’s Premiere African American Theatre Company. A native of Washington, DC, Nancy holds a BA in Performing Arts (Theatre & Dance) from American University and has been a theatre professional for over 40 years - actor, director, producer, choreographer, and costume designer.
She’s received NAACP Theatre Award nominations for acting, choreography, and costume design, winning the 2011 ‘Best Costumes’ Award for Towne Street Theatre’s Langston and Nicolas. Her many acting credits include: (Theatre) Daddy’s Dyin’ Who’s Got The Will, Sister Cities, Joleta, Millennium in Black, A Raisin in the Sun, Sweet Charity and Damn Yankees; (TV/Film) The Closer, FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, and SET IT OFF.
Nancy has directed and choreographed numerous productions including Five on the Black Hand Side, Passing, Family Album, and most recently, PassingSolo, in addition to TST Kids productions of Bubbling Brown Sugar, Beauty and the Beast, and The Wiz.
Working for a more equitable and inclusive theatre community, Nancy Renee is a co-author of the LA Anti-Racist Theatre Standards.
The Towne Street Theatre’s mission is to create, develop and produce original work that is reflective of the African American experience and perspective. A Black female-led theatre arts organization, Towne Street provides a home for a diverse group of artists to be free in their efforts to create and explore theatre without constraints.
The Towne Street Theatre envisions a future where artists of all backgrounds are free to express their creativity, and where social justice issues are continually explored, dismantled and acknowledged through the healing power of theatre.
