OUR STORY

Latino Theater Company

Artistic Directors of Color Alliance (ADCA) – Greater Los Angeles is a 14-member coalition that represents the diverse demographic communities that make up the plurality of Greater Los Angeles. We tell the stories of diverse peoples in Greater Los Angeles, and create a thriving community for theaters, artists, and administrators of color and the communities we serve.

In the Spring of 2020, a group of Los Angeles-area artistic directors of color convened to discuss how mainstream media inadequately covers the work we produce. After a few meetings with Los Angeles Times editors, the group decided to pivot and collectively pursue funding opportunities to stabilize and grow our theaters. American theater was facing its own “racial reckoning” amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and the funding disparities between Predominantly White Institutions and Theaters of Color became even more apparent. After receiving a grant from the Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative, we hired long-time arts consultant Olga Garay-English to help shepherd the work.

The Artistic Directors of Color Alliance – Greater Los Angeles was created after a year of research and surveying the needs of theaters in the cohort. The Alliance now moves forward with a 10-year plan to secure funding that will bolster our theaters and enrich Los Angeles’ artistic landscape. Our work is inspired by the Twin Cities Theaters of Color Coalition.
